Rules: how Book of Monsters works
The Book of Monsters grid has 7 × 7 positions. Wins come from clusters: groups of at least 5 matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically. Diagonal neighbours do not count.
The return to player (RTP) of the standard version is 96.5%. That is an average over a very large number of spins, not a promise for a single session. Casinos may run versions with a lower RTP; the in-game info menu shows the value that applies.
The maximum win is capped at 5,000x your stake. At €1 per spin that would be €5,000; if a bonus reaches the cap, the round ends automatically.
Free spins, features and bonus round
In the base game, giant symbols from 3x3 to 7x7 can land at random. Four to seven bonus symbols award five to eight free spins with a random fat symbol. Before the round starts, you can gamble for more free spins (up to eight) or a more valuable fat symbol. If enough matching symbols land, the fat symbol grows from 1x1 to a 7x7 giant and brings one to three extra free spins each time.
Scatter symbols trigger the free spins. How many scatters you need and how many spins you get is shown in the paytable; in most games of this kind the free spins can be retriggered during the bonus.

With very high volatility, the balance can run out before the free spins arrive. A smaller stake per spin stretches the budget over more rounds.
Volatility, hit rate and budget
According to published game data, about 23.2% of spins end in a win, so on average every 4.3th spin. Many of those hits are smaller than the stake, though.
As a rough rule of thumb for a game with very high volatility: plan a budget for about 400 spins, which at €0.50 per spin is €200. That gives you a reasonable chance of seeing the bonus round. Set a limit and a time frame beforehand, and do not raise your stake to chase losses.
